Shawsheen Village
Shawsheen Village was named after the Indian name for the Shawsheen River. Shawsheen means Great Spring.
Shawsheen Village was built as an idyllic locale, a model community, a planned environment. It was “The Model Community and the Home of the Offices and Staff of the American Woolen Co.” Nothing was haphazard, nothing left to chance. Everything was carefully planned.
As described in the book “Mills, Mansions and Mergers – the life of William M. Wood”, this project was part of a movement by town planners, social reformers and government agencies to create a new urban-industrial environment for the 20th century.
